IS IT THAT EASY?

Last weekend I was waiting for my lady to finish work. It was a cold, rainy, somewhat depressing day. So much so that I exchanged my usual attire of shorts and a t-shirt for jeans and a jacket. I sat on a large, circular metal bench in the center of town. It was cold and damp. The few people who were out were rushing by to avoid the miserable conditions.

Amongst the passers-by, an older woman caught my eye. She was slowly strolling with a cane. She also carried a large, blue handbag. Although a woman of about eighty years old, she still retained her elegant style of younger years. So beautifully dressed in a stylish coat and a warm hat atop her black and grey hair. Her gold-framed glasses reflected off her perfect black skin.

As she moved slowly in my direction, I noticed she bowed her head. Maybe the wind and the rain were too much for her; perhaps she walked in that manner because her neck and spine had worn over many years, or maybe she was alone as her peers had passed away around her? I don’t know. But I did know she looked sad. Then she noticed I was looking at her.

I smiled at her. Her face and demeanor instantly changed. She smiled back, and her beautiful white teeth shone. I didn’t know her name, but suddenly she became a ‘Lillian’ in my mind. As Lillian lit up, I likewise felt so warm and comfortable. It’s amazing what a smile can do. It almost seems unfair as Lillian’s smile caused me so much joy. I gave a little and received so much in return. It seemed like a great deal.

IS IT THAT EASY?

Yes, it is. If you genuinely want to make a difference, please take this challenge. Smile at a stranger. After all, a stranger is just somebody you don’t know yet. People don’t care how much we know until they know how much we care. Smiling doesn’t cost anything; however, offering a free heartfelt smile to a stranger, whether a Lillian or an Arthur, returns to you in many ways as you then make a difference to yourself. The truth is if you want to make a difference, look outside of yourself. The easiest and most uplifting way to do this is to smile. Is it that easy? Yes, it is.
